Palazzo Ducale in Modena: restoration of the frescoed ceiling completedAfter six months of patient restoration, the consolidation works on the ceiling of the Hall of Honour of the Palazzo Ducale in Modena, the seat of the Military Academy, have just ended. An area of 440 square metres, frescoed in 1696 by Marcantonio Franceschini, Luigi Quaini and Enrico Haffner with a representation of the coronation of Bradamante by Jupiter. The fresco had suffered - even in recent times - from damage and detachment of some parts, due to various factors, including the vibrations produced by the trolley buses before the pedestrianization of the areas near the Palace. The intervention, carried out by Paola Righi under the supervision of L'Arca Srl on a project made by the Modena-based firm Ingegneri Riuniti, was made possible by a loan of 250 thousand Euros granted by the Foundation of the Cassa di Risparmio di Modena. To carry out the restoration of the building, a special scaffolding of more than 30 metres was built; thanks to it, the restorers carried out “velinature” (protective coating), consolidated the parts at risk, carried out injections of mortar inside the cracks, after having carried out a manual beating for the control of detachments. After being closed to the public for almost a decade, on December, 5th, the sumptuous Hall of Honour was returned to citizens and tourists with a ceremony attended by the Commander of the ‘Rodolfo Sganga’ Academy, the Mayor of Modena Giancarlo Muzzarelli, the President of the Foundation Paolo Cavicchioli, as well as the Project Manager Giovanni Daniele Malaguti, Engineer Giuseppe Iadarola and restorer Paola Righi.
