Multipurpose gym in Il Poggio (MO)

A new sports centre for the well-being of the entire community

The new Sports Center of Vignola is located in Via Montanara and will be built with a dual purpose of use or use in the school and for the organization of competitive events.  The main entrance for spectators is located to the east, distinguishable by the large continuous facade, where there are a local facilities, the infirmary, two warehouses and a second gym with services. Also to the east is the vertical link that allows viewers to reach the grandstand raised above the field. From the grandstand you can access a balcony, connected to the ground through an external staircase to the west of the complex.  A second access dedicated to athletes is located in the West, which leads directly to the locker room area with its parking spaces. In the North there are changing rooms for athletes and referees with mobile walls that guarantee the flexibility of the environments in case of need. The entire structure has been carefully designed to ensure accessibility even to those who live with reduced mobility.  The block of services and ancillary rooms seems to encircle the larger and emerging volume of the gym, whose profile traces the line of the roofing beams, configuring itself as a treasure chest for sports activities carried out inside.

The warm colors chosen for the exterior in the palette of brick refer to the building tradition of the place, which consists of buildings, in particular castles, characterized by artificial stone walls.  The lining of the gym is very varied and articulated and highlights the volumes contrasting with each other.  For the interior, however, the design of spaces aimed at comfort, in which the well-being of the person is the main objective, is also achieved through the functional use of materials.  The wood of the flooring and the roof, together with the chromatic choices applied on the walls, give the space a sense of warmth, comfort and environmental well-being. With the functional color you want to reshape the spaces, recreating the conditions to achieve the beneficial effects that this produces in the environment and on individuals.

The supporting structure in wood is of the point type, that is given by beams and pillars, assisted by solid walls in xlam where it is necessary to give greater stability to the casing; the structure is completed through the use of braces in wood, hidden inside the infill walls, or steel if left exposed.  Also the coverage of the play area is made of wood, given by exposed beams, interspersed with joists and dominated by OSB panels.  It was chosen to build with a dry construction system to facilitate the management of the construction site and reduce construction time ensuring excellent seismic, fire, acoustic and thermal performance. The choice of wood as a material responds to the desire to build in an environmentally friendly manner and attentive to the health of people.
